When the code in a post does not work

Every code sample here is actually run before the post goes out, but your sheet layout or account setup may differ. Those reports are the most useful mail I get — I check them, fix the post, and save the next reader the same trouble.

Four things make it much faster to answer:

Which post — the title or URL, and the part number if it is a series
The error — copy the message from the Apps Script execution log as is
Which code — which code block in that post
What you were doing — clicking a menu item, saving, running a trigger

Practical questions

Questions like "here is my situation, how would you automate it" are welcome. If the answer is long, I sometimes turn it into its own post — and even then, company names, personal names and figures you send are never used; everything is generalized.

Advertising & collaboration

Advertising, partnership and content collaboration proposals go to the same address. Include what you have in mind and the terms, and I will review and reply.

Before you send

Please do not include internal company documents, customer data, payroll or contract details. Sheet structure and the error message are enough to diagnose a problem. If real data is needed, send a copy of the sheet with the values replaced by fake ones.
